I'm always looking for end of the world/civilization novels, and zombie apocalypse stories always seem like a good place to find them....but, unfortunately, are so often crap. In fact, "crap" would be a rather nice way to describe "Dying to Live." The cheesy cliche of a title should've warned me, I guess, but I can be a sucker for punishment when it comes to zombies (obviously).

The Amazon reviews are mostly pretty positive, and several of them called this a "philosophical" zombie book. This book is about as philosophical as MTV's "The Hills." It tries, really, and it takes itself very seriously through it's attempts at "Why Are We All Here? What Is The Point of Existence? What Really Separates the Living from the Undead?" rhetoric, but it comes across like your stereotypical "Valley girl" saying, "What is the point of, like, living, if, like, I can't buy, like, Prada anymore?"

Oh, and then there's the idea that every single person in prison is a racist, rapist and pedophile (because there are no men of color in prison). Apparently Paffenroth hasn't ever heard of the War on Drugs or any other variety of non-violent or even violent-but-not-related-to-sex crimes.

This book sucks. If you know any apocalyptic novels (with or without zombies) that don't suck, please tell me.

I am desperately in love with World War Z, but I'd be surprised if you hadn't tried that one already.
