Sabriel was born in the Old Kingdom, but has been brought up outside it, spending most of her life at a boarding school on the far side of the Wall that borders her birthplace. Her father is Abhorsen, a necromancer, who, rather than raising the Dead, is charged with laying them back to rest when they intrude into Life. When her father goes missing, Sabriel must take up his task in order to find him.
Garth Nix is rapidly becoming a favourite of mine. He has a talent for creating quirky fantasy worlds that are quite bizarre and yet believable. Sabriel's quest to find her father is immensely readable despite being pretty gruesome in places. Interesting characters and a nicely constructed plot. I shall be seeking out the sequel as soon as possible.
