Ripley Under Water
by Patricia Highsmith

Started: March 9, 2010
Finished: March 20, 2010

A decent enough book. I have to say that as a whole I was pretty underwhelmed by the Ripley books. They were fun reads but not great or even good literature by any means. Better than the average bestseller but I'm not sure what all the praise was really about. 309 pages. Grade: B

The Wrong Case
by James Crumley

Started: March 8, 2010
Finished: March 22, 2010

It's been a long time since I've fallen in love with a newly discovered writer's work like I think I'm falling for James Crumley's novels right now. Just a top-notch read. 272 pages. Grade: A

Henry and the Clubhouse
by Beverly Cleary

Started: March 19, 2010
Finished: March 22, 2010

Amusing enough but nothing special. 199 pages. Grade: B-

Judgment Day
by James T. Farrell

Started: March 8, 2010
Finished: March 23, 2010

I didn't like this near as much as the first two Studs Lonigan books. There was way too much emphasis on nostalgia--long chapters devoted to detailed recaps of movies that Studs has watched, of newspaper stories he's read, of radio comedies and news broadcasts he's listened to. A very repetitive book. It wasn't bad when it was moving the plot forward, there were just way too many nostalgic sidetrips. 384 pages. Grade: C+
