Author: Emma Donaghue
Themes/Topics: Horror, Kidnapping
A very unique read: not my typical fair. I tend to stay away from horror but this was a pick from my book club with friends. I don't want to say much because the less you know the better it will be for you to read, and you SHOULD read it. The narrative perspective was really surprising. It was a great read, and I definitely recommend it, but it's certainly not for the faint of heart. This really oversimplifies the novel but if you are a fan of Law and Order: SVU, this is right up your alley. Even if you're not, still give it a try.
Title: My Name is Mary Sutter
Author: Robin Oliveira
Themes/Topics: Historical Fiction, Civil War, Feminism
I really wish I read more non-fiction but historical fiction is about as close as I get. Again, not something I would have naturally picked up, another book club pick, but overall I found it a good read. "Feminism" is a label I put on the book, really I just mean that the protagonist is a female and the novel highlights her struggle to follow her dream and support her family. I found it pretty interesting because I don't know a lot about history so learning about the conditions during the Civil War was interesting. Not sure of the historical accuracy so someone who is a history buff may find it to be incorrect or basic.
