Book 56 for 2011

The Gate of Gods by Martha Wells. 484 pages
Third book of the Fall of Ile-RIen trilogy. This was one of those books which I wanted to finish, to find out how things worked out for the protagonists, but simultaneously didn't want to because then it would be over…

Tremaine and her friends finally reach Capidara with the Ravenna, but the Gardier aren't far behind and things are still looking decidedly bleak for the Rienish and the Syprians. Experiments with a new spell circle are interrupted by a Gardier attack and further ho-jinks ensue…
I love this series. The worldbuilding, the characters, the dialogue, everything. Yes, there are flaws - the villains, when finally revealed seemed a tad inadequate to have wreaked as much havoc as they had, for instance - but I don't really mind, because the ride as a whole was just that good. I'd wish that wells had written more books, but if she wrote more quickly, perhaps she wouldn't write so well...
