Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch. 390 pages
It's not often that I read the first book in a series and order the second book when I'm two chapters in, but that's what happened with this one. Aaronovitch's style hits exactly the right note both for me and for Rob and we're greatly looking forward to Moon Over Soho.
Peter Grant is a probationary constable in the Metropolitan Police force and is looking glumly at being assigned to a unit that deals with the Met's mountain of paperwork. And then he meets a ghost.
The plot is a marvellous mix of the police procedural and supernatural elements, leavened with a streak of wisecracking humour. Peter is reminiscent of Harry Dresden if he was a London copper, but he's also very much a character in his own right.
If the next book in the series is as good as this one, I shall be very happy indeed.
