The Truth of Valor by Tanya Huff. 404 pages.
Fifth book in the Confederation series. Under a cut as there will be spoilers for the previous books in the series.
After discovering that the war between the Confederation and the aliens they called the Others had been engineered by the grey plastic aliens as a social experiment, Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr leaves the marines and goes to work as a Civilian Salvage Operator with her lover Craig Ryder. But a quiet life was never on the cards - not long into their first expedition, Craig is kidnapped by pirates and Torin is left for dead. Given that it's Torin, the pirates would have been wise to make sure….
Many familiar characters from previous books return in this one and there are new ones too. It has a bit of a different feel to the earlier books, which isn't surprising, given Torin's changed circumstances, and it's interesting to see her coping with civilian life and without the structure of the Marine Corps to back her up.
Another riveting adventure with Torin and her friends, peppered with one-liners. The ending seems to to suggest there's more to come, and I look forward to it.
