Book 5 - Gone Girl (Gillian Flynn)

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife's head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media--as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents--the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter--but is he really a killer?

So Amy and Nick lose their writing jobs to the advance of the internet, and they have to move from Amy’s Manhattan hometown to Nick’s Missouri hometown in order to care for his ailing parents. On their fifth anniversary, she disappears thoroughly and completely. The police investigate, and the plot thickens. There are more twists and turns than the Mississippi River, and the writing is quite clever, but I did not like this book at all. A setting that’s deep in the throes of the recent economic downturn is actually the least depressing element of the story. It’s told through alternating first-person narratives from Amy and Nick, and in different ways they both come across as self-centered and pathetic. She is snotty and high-strung, and he is immature and resentful. I had some sympathy towards Nick’s twin sister, but really, by the (highly unsatisfying) end, the only character I cared about was the cat.
