Paranormal Chronicles Tales of Humor, Horror, and the Absolutely StrangeParanormal Chronicles Tales of Humor, Horror, and the Absolutely Strange by Neal Parks

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a nice self-pubbed book on the paranormal happenings in southeast & central Ohio and western West Virginia among other places written by a local paranormal investigator. You can find him at www.parks-paranormal.8m.com. It’s a compilation of local legends and things that happened to family members interspersed with investigations Parks has carried out.

It’s not all just ghost stories. There are UFO stories mixed in. I particularly liked the one about the Crosskey Tavern in Chillicothe mostly because it’s someplace I can easily go and probably will next time I’m there. The same goes for the Majestic movie theatre there.

All in all, easy to read and fun. It’s of local interest though there are a couple of typo that made me smile (gentile for gentle and antic for antique) but that’s just cosmetic stuff. It would be fun for people with interest in the paranormal.

The Haunted History of the Ohio State Reformatory (Haunted America)The Haunted History of the Ohio State Reformatory by Sherri Brake

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

How you’ll perceive this book depends on what you’re hoping for. The title promises the haunted history of the Ohio State Reformatory. It is heavy on the history and less on the haunted. I’m fine with both so I enjoyed it.

The first eighty or so pages are dedicated more to the history of the reformatory and there is plenty of it. This includes several long lists of people imprisoned here and thecrimes they committed. The second half of the book features the haunts of the place, several agreeing on hot spots like the chapel and the toilet room. Most of the tales were from the author’s paranormal investigations and those of many others so it ends up a bit choppy in places. Still over all I enjoyed it.
