December 2014 reading

December 2014 reading:

45. Shaman Rises, by C.E. Murphy (384 pages)
The impossible sends Jo racing back to Seattle, where she'll find herself facing down the Master in a final battle. Cried during part of this. Really a bit sad that the series is over--that's how I feel when I finish something this good. I'd love a glimpse into the future, but maybe I'll get that in the short story which concludes No Dominion.

46. No Dominion, by C.E. Murphy (390 pages)
A collection of short stories set in the Walker Papers universe, we get to learn Morrison's version of his first encounter with Jo, Gary's version of his first meeting with her as well, along with his adventures riding with the Hunt, and Caitriona's journey toward becoming the new Irish Mage, among others. We also get to see Ashley in adventures both within the series, and 20 years later.

47. Many Waters, by Madeleine L'Engle (310 pages)
The Murry twins accidentally mess up an experiment their parents are doing, and wind up transported... elsewhere. Eventually they come to realize they have gone back to the time and place of Noah, deposited in a land populated by mythical creatures. They've been sent for a reason--if only they knew what it was! I was taken aback by the time period (at least in the timeline of the Murry family) of the book, but I think that's part of the charm of this series; time as non-linear.

48. The Astronaut Checks His Watch, by Sarah Fawn Montgomery (25 pages)
This is a beautiful chapbook of poetry about a man, a boy, an astronaut. It reads like a novel in poetry. It's going to take a while for these poems to settle in me.

49. The Witch With No Name, by Kim Harrison (462 pages)
Rachel's hand is forced regarding the fate of the souls of undead vampires--and that's not the only problem she faces. A faction of elves plays for a power grab that promises to drive the demons to extinction or start a war. At the same time, she's starting to doubt whether her relationship with Trent, amazing as it is, is a good idea given that it's the cause of some major problems. She's going to need all her luck and friends to get through this adventure.

50. Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet, by Darynda Jones (320 pages)
Charley is recovering from her unpleasant encounter with Reyes' father--well, his one in this plane, anyway. Only she's not doing a very good job of it, becoming a bit of a hoarder before a case tosses itself in her lap. One case, of course, is never as simple as just one case, and Charley finds herself fighting demons.

51. Fifth Grave Past the Light, by Darynda Jones (339 pages)
Charley abruptly finds herself with no less than twenty-seven new roommates--only they're all traumatized ghosts. To add to that, there's an arsonist on the loose, a client who suspects her husband (who has a violent streak) is cheating on her, a police chief who's gained an obsession with Charley's case-solving skills, and Reyes is her new neighbor.

52. Holidays on Ice, by David Sedaris (166 pages)
This is a collection of short creative nonfiction essays, and as usual David Sederis has a fun and sometimes absurd sense of humor. I enjoyed most of these shorts, but I honestly enjoyed the first one the most.

53. Shimmer, by Darynda Jones (7 pages)
Random porn short for the Charley Davidson series. There's really not much to it.

54. Glow, by Darnda Jones (10 pages)
"Shimmer" from Reyes' point of view. Far more interesting than from Charley's, with more information and insight. I liked this one.

55. The Sea of Monsters, by Rick Riordan (288 pages)
Things are going fine for Percy, right up until they go terribly wrong. He's attacked on the last day of school, dreams Grover is in trouble, and makes it to camp to discover the tree protecting it has been poisoned. Time for another adventure--this time with a half-brother along for the ride.
