Book 32: Reliquary (Agent Pendergast #2) .
Author: Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, 1997.
Genre: Crime Thriller. Eco Horror.
Other Details: ebook. 486 pages.

Hidden beneath Manhattan is a warren of tunnels, sewers, and galleries, mostly forgotten by those who walk the streets above. There lies the ultimate secret of the Museum Beast... When two grotesquely deformed skeletons are found deep in the mud off the Manhattan shoreline, museum curator Margo Green is called in to aid the investigation. Margo must once again team up with police lieutenant D'Agosta and FBI agent Pendergast, as well as the brilliant Dr. Frock, to try and solve the puzzle. The trail soon leads deep underground, where they will face the awakening of a slumbering nightmare. - synopsis from authors' website.

This is a direct sequel to Relic and it proved an exciting read that answered a number of mysteries from that first novel. Relic is one of those books that I have re-read a few times over the years and also whenever the film is shown on telly I always enjoy it even though I've seen it many times. Knowing that Preston and Child have written quite a few books featuring Agent Pendergast I have always meant to read the series as the mixture of crime with horror attracts me.

There is something about novels with underground scenes that evoke a claustrophobic response in me. Here Preston and Child certainly captured that through the eyes (and nostrils) of various characters. At one point when our group is making its way through tunnels and become aware of drums in the deep it was hard not to think of the mines of Moria. Gripping stuff and a very engaging read.
