This was actually a reread for me. I haven't read Shelters of Stone yet and wanted to revisit the rest of the series first because it has been so long. I was a little amazed at how much of an impression Clan of the Cave Bear must have made on my young mind. I first read it at about 12 years of age. I remembered almost everything in fairly pristine detail. I guess it makes sense, in a way. The story is about a young girl struggling through her life in prehistory. She became a heroine for me. That young amazement left me a bit let down this reading, though. It's not a bad book by any means. I have been pre-exposed, so I didn't experience that initial awe at imagining prehistoric life (which I never had considered before) for the first time. Well, three more interim books to go before the one I haven't read. Hopefully I'll get to them eventually. :)
