デビルズライン 4 [Devil's Line 4] (Devils' Line, #4)デビルズライン 4 [Devil's Line 4] by Ryo Hanada

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A lot happens in this volume. Without spoiling it (since all these things are in the blurb), Tsukasa and Anzai's relationship moves forward after she's been taken hostage by Zero Seven, the lady sniper. We see a more human side of the Zeroes (well some of them) and the more calloused side of them as well. Their reach is bigger than any of them know and the police are infiltrated.

There also is an old doctor who's tried to help Anzai and Hans in the past, who is trying to help them still, though Hans is much better at controlling his devil. There are some funny moments with the doc and we learn Hans is on the run from ONLO, a group that deals with (and perhaps experiments on) devils.

There is a bombshell at the end. I'm looking forward to the next volume. The art still isn't my favorite but it fits this story which is maturing nicely.

文豪ストレイドッグス 4 [Bungō Stray Dogs 4]文豪ストレイドッグス 4 [Bungō Stray Dogs 4] by Kafka Asagiri

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is becoming a guilty pleasure manga for me. This opens with the group welcoming the former mafia assassin, taking her in, shielding her from the law and even the director steps in to keep her safe. Also Atsushi is assigned a case with Kenji (a new character) who is something of a country hick but also super strong. Against this we have another storyline of the mafia and we get some humanizing character development there.

But the mafia is quickly displaced by a new, powerful group from North America led by F. Scott Fitzgerald and L.M. Montgomery for starters who are not amused when their offer to buy out the Armed Detective Agency is soundly rejected. They're out to take it anyway they can, leaving Atsushi up against a supremely creepy enemy.

The art is great and the story interesting but it does run the ragged edge of too many fight scenes against too little plot for me. There are a tons of characters in this so get out your score cards.
