Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
by J.K. Rowling

Started: February 26, 2010
Finished: March 2, 2010

My least favorite of the Harry Potter books. It's not a horrible read but it's definitely the most childish. Plus there are a lot of plot holes. 341 pages. Grade: B-

The Last Good Kiss
by James Crumley

Started: February 21, 2010
Finished: March 4, 2010

Why had I never heard of this book or author before? A fantastically written, very engrossing cross between Raymond Chandler and Charles Bukowski, two of my all-time favorite authors. 244 pages. Grade: A+

Sins of the City: The Real Los Angeles Noir
by Jim Heimann

Started/Finished: March 4, 2010

A book filled with high quality reproductions of photographs of the seedier side of life in 1930s-1940s Los Angeles. Each photograph is accompanied by informative writing describing what is going on. This book does a great job of recreating the atmosphere of Los Angeles during the original noir period. 160 pages. Grade: A-

The Boy Who Followed Ripley
by Patricia Highsmith

Started: March 5, 2010
Finished: March 9, 2010

A pretty good read. This was probably Tom Ripley at his most likeable. 292 pages. Grade: B

Henry and Ribsy
by Beverly Cleary

Started: March 8, 2010
Finished: March 9, 2010

I liked best the chapter with Ramona stealing Ribsy's bone. You can tell Cleary was starting to become a more confident writer by this point. 188 pages. Grade: B+

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
by J.K. Rowling

Started: March 8, 2010
Finished: March 13, 2010

I guess this is the best written of the Harry Potter books. It's a smart, well-done plot that is great on the first read and even holds up very well on subsequent reads once you know the whole Sirius Black story. 435 pages. Grade: A

118. Beezus and Ramona

Beezus and Ramona
by Beverly Cleary

Started: March 9, 2010
Finished: March 14, 2010

A huge step up in quality from the Henry Huggins books. Though I'm guessing a big part of that is just that Beezus and, especially, Ramona Quimby are much more interesting characters. But this is also just more confident writing and better stories. I was also glad that the version of this that I read had the original Louis Darling illustrations. They are 10,000x better than the new illustrations that were put in the reissues of all of Beverly Cleary's books a few years ago. I'm not sure why the illustrations were changed since Darling's illustrations really aren't dated at all, except maybe in that the adult female characters are in dresses all the time. 159 pages. Grade: A

Next up: Money to Burn by James Grippando

This wasn't one of Fieldings best. It dragged in parts and rushed in others and I really didn't enjoy the ending to the novel.
