The First Circle
by Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Started: September 14, 2011

Great writing, I guess, but I must confess that I got bored with this book about halfway through. It was too hard to keep the characters with their complicated Russian names straight. I did like a ton of individual scenes in this one, but it didn't really click for me as a whole. 741 pages. Grade: B-

Backstage Passes & Backstabbing Bastards: Memoirs of a Rock 'N' Roll Survivor
by Al Kooper

Started: September 14, 2011
Finished: September 25, 2011

One of the better rock memoirs I've ever read, mainly because it seems pretty truthful. Kooper has done a ton of interesting things in the music business over the last forty years. He's not afraid to tell the good and bad about himself or others but also doesn't seem to be writing in a vindicative or bragging manner at all. 308 pages. Grade: A-
